Stop Going to Church

25 Jul

That’s probably the last thing that you’d expect to hear from a pastor. But it is a message that many of us need to hear because sometimes we get this whole religious thing wrong. How many times have you gone to church because you were looking for a special favor from God? How many times have you taken communion without even giving one thought of gratitude to Jesus who sacrificed himself for all the wrong you’ve ever done? And now…you feel distant from God? Like he doesn’t answer prayers? And maybe he doesn’t even exist? You’re frustrated and maybe even thinking about throwing out your faith?

You aren’t alone. There are a lot of disillusioned people in church each Sunday. But let me suggest to you why: If you aren’t actively following God’s will, you will never hear anything from him. That’s right…nothing. And if you don’t find out what it is, then you might as well save yourself an hour each Sunday and sleep in. Stop going to church. Because you will never hear from God at all unless you are doing what he wants you to do with your life.

And what is it that he wants you to do? God wants you to actively LOVE. He wants to see that you understand that LOVE is always an action. He loved you so much that he sent his son to die on a cross for your sin. And he wants to know if you “get it.” Read Isaiah 58 if you want to know the kind of life that God wants you to live. And if you want to live that kind of life in the context of a great, but flawed community, then join us this Sunday at Naperville Christian Church.

Peace,

Neil
