Lessons in Maturity from @justinbieber —#NeverSayNever

9 May

I read an interview a few days ago with one of  CSI’s stars, Marg Helgenberger.  She talked about the time that Justin Bieber guest starred on the show and she said: “I shouldn’t be saying this, but he was kind of a brat.”

It made me think of all of the times that my detractors would say something about me.  And all of the times that I would want to say the perfect thing back to them to make them finally be quiet.  There must be something to say to get them to zip it, right?!

I have good news and bad news.  The good news is that there is something that you can do to make them be quiet.  The bad news is that it won’t happen after you take them down with perfectly crafted words.  So what will do it?

By refusing to get in the mix.  You will never win with bullies as long as you try to fight fire with fire.  It will only make the fire stronger.  Justin Bieber is 17 years old and he already knows that.  After days of Twitter-silence, this is how he responded to Marg Helgenberger:

“It’s kinda lame when someone you met briefly and never worked with comments on you.  I will continue to wish them luck and be kind.”

WOW!  That is profound and humbling to me.  He was attacked by name by a woman in her 50’s.  And at the age of 17, he had the wisdom to be quiet about it and then finally addressed it almost like a parable you’d find in the Bible.  He never called her out by name, but he told the facts of the story.  And then he said that while it was “kinda lame,” he will only offer her luck and kindness.

Marg, you were right…you shouldn’t have said that.  But what you should do is apologize to Justin.  And you just got schooled by a 17 year old.  So did I.  #NeverSayNever.
