State of the Church

23 May

Do you ever sit back and wonder why we do the things that we do in our church services? I mean…why do we sing a certain number of songs or do communion in a certain way or get excited about certain instruments being used in the band but bristle about others?

I think that the answer is pretty simple. We are creatures of conformity and habit. Somewhere along the way, our foundation shifted. We accepted teachings from pastors and lay leaders as if they were equivalent to Gospel instruction.

Have you ever read scripture about the Pharisees and thought how silly they were not to understand Christ’s teachings? Have you ever wondered how Peter could have denied Christ 3x’s even AFTER Jesus told him that he would? Did you ever think that Nicodemus was un-educated to wonder what it meant to be born-again?

I’ve got news for you…You and I are not the heroes in this story. You and I are the people that worry more about our exteriors than openly dealing with our necrotic souls. You and I are the people that don’t understand anything about what it means to be born-again. You and I deny Christ a hundred times a day by our actions. We are the Pharisees.

We make Christ grieve because we miss the point. We make Christ grieve because people are dying spiritually and we are focused on formality. We make Christ grieve because we have conformed to the teaching of man.

God is calling out to us today. Let’s be the church.

Peace,

Neil
